Purpose
The City of West Torrens is committed to assisting the community in reducing its mains water consumption and reducing the pollutants entering its stormwater system through a range of mechanisms such as incentives, education and resources.
Overview
They provide an opportunity for local residents to receive a rebate on the cost of a new rainwater tank, with a minimum tank capacity of 1,000 litres or a planter box rain garden.
Each rebate is limited to one per property.
Rebate 1: Rainwater tank (plumbed or unplumbed)
Successful applicants will receive a rebate based on the following sliding scale:

2,000 - 4,999 litres | $300 |
5,000 – 10,000 litres | $400 |
10,001 + litres | $500 |
*Please note: The capacity may be reached by installing two or more smaller tanks.
Rebate 2: $200 Plumbed in rainwater tank for new developments or extensions
To be eligible, applicants will be required to show all of the following:
- The new rainwater tank is 2,000 litres or larger.
- 75 per cent of the new dwelling's roof catchment is directed to the plumbed in rainwater tank.
- The new rainwater tank is plumbed into at least two of the following: toilets, water heater, all cold water outlets in the laundry of the home
Applicants who demonstrate the above will be eligible for a $200 rebate from Council, plus the corresponding amount shown in Rebate 1 (for 2,000 litres and above only).
Rebate 3: Planter box rain garden
The available rebate is for 100 per cent to a maximum $500 for the construction of a planter box rain garden for the following:
- planter box
- soil (including gravel)
- native plants as listed within 'Building a lined planter box raingarden'
- piping.
Total funding for the rebates is limited and applications will be processed on a first come first served basis until all funding is exhausted.
Limitations
To be eligible, applicants must be able to meet the following criteria:
- Applicants must meet the rainwater tank capacities shown in Section 1 of this form 'Rebate Amount' or materials in line with those shown in the attachment 'Building a lined planter box raingarden'.
- The residential property must be located within the City of West Torrens local government boundary.
- Applicants must be the property owner.
- Applications for strata title residential properties must include written approval from the body corporate.
- Non-residential properties including commercial, school, not-for-profit/ charitable organisations or business premises are not eligible.
- A maximum of one rebate is offered per property per year as outlined in Section 1. Rebate Amount.
- Rebates relate to activities (as outlined in Section 1. Rebate Amount) that are undertaken during the 2023/24 and 2024/25 financial years.
- Rainwater tanks must be purchased new (not second hand).
- Applications for Rebate 2: Plumbed in Rainwater Tanks for new developments and extensions, will be required to show evidence as outlined in Section 1. Rebate Amount.
- Planter Box Rain Gardens are required to be constructed in line with the attachment 'Building a Lined Planter Box Rain Garden'.
- The rainwater tank/ planter box rain garden must be installed i.e. connected to a roof catchment on the property.
- Rebate applications must include legible and clear supporting documentation for the following:
- Rebate 1 - photos of the rainwater tank installed and connected to the roof area and paid receipt.
- Rebate 2 - photos of the rainwater tank installed and connected to the roof area, as well as photos of all plumbed connections to toilets, laundry etc, and paid receipt.
- Rebate 3 - photos of the rain garden installed and connected to the roof area and paid receipt(s).
