Purpose
The Environmental levy grant support a range of projects that protect bushland, engage communities and reduce emissions.
Overview
The grants are are available under two categories, Net Zero grants and Environmental Conservation grants.
Net Zero grants:
Grants should be a minimum of $3,000 and maximum of $30,000. Please note: Special consideration will be given to requests for lesser amounts, but these need to be discussed with Council before applying.
This could include:
- Electrifying our communities and community renewables initiatives
- Innovative community initiatives for energy/waste/transport
- Creating a plastic-free canteen at your school
- School or community edible garden beds with composting system
- Community engagement through social/multi-media projects.
Environmental Conservation grants:
Grants should be a minimum of $3,000 and maximum of $5,000.
Please note: Special consideration will be given to requests for higher amounts, but these need to be discussed with Council before applying.
Projects that inspire action to improve the condition of our natural environment or conserve native flora and fauna will be considered. Projects that align with one or more of our 2025 themes will be prioritised for funding:
- Theme 1 - Urban greening: Projects that enhance canopy and biodiversity in urban parks and streetscapes
- Theme 2 - Empowering community action: Projects that support citizen science projects for real world conservation and research.
- Theme 3 - Invasive species: Projects that will have a lasting strategic benefit in controlling invasive species, especially near waterways.
Example
Some of the 2024 grant recipients included:
- Net Zero Waste less compost more group -funding to support ongoing kids clothing, toy and book swap events.
- Smart Schools - Holy Family Primary School installed a native beehive and pollinator attracting plants in their garden.
- Conservation - Princes Park Bushcare group employed contractors to help them remove invasive vines.
- Research - Macquarie University looked at comparing wildlife diversity before and after hazard reduction burns.
- Wildlife - Sydney Bee Rescue installed 12 swarm traps at St Ives Showground to capture and relocate feral honeybee colonies.
Limitations
Applications are open to community groups, schools, universities, not-for-profits and individuals within Ku-ring-gai.
