Purpose

The Brisbane Portrait Prize is all about celebrating Brisbane portrait artists and their sitters, while encouraging public engagement with the arts.

Overview

The prizes in the Competition are:

  • Brisbane Portrait Prize Lord Mayors Prize and overall winner $50,000 (acquisitive)
  • The Courier-Mail Peoples Choice Prize $7,500 (non-acquisitive)
  • Veracity Digital Prize $10,000 (non-acquisitive)
  • Sylvia Jones Prize for Women Artists $5,000 (non-acquisitive)
  • Performing Arts and Music Prize $7,500 (non-acquisitive)
  • Packers Prize $5,000 (non-acquisitive)
  • Metro Arts Experimental Prize Two week exhibition plus $1,000 (non-acquisitive)
  • Emerging Artists Prize 2 prizes, each a $1,000 art supplies voucher (non-acquisitive)
  • Next Gen Prize $2,000 (non-acquisitive)

Entry Cost:

  • For the main competition:
    • A non-refundable $65 entry fee (inc GST) per entry must be paid at the time of entry.
    • Payment must be made online via credit card.
  • For the Next Gen competition:
    • A non-refundable $25 entry fee (inc GST) per entry must be paid at the time of entry.
    • For individual entries, payment must be made online via credit card.
    • For group entries, you may elect to pay via invoice (this must be arranged in advance).

Limitations

Eligibility 

To enter the Competition, you must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Both you and the subject of your artwork must have a connection with Brisbane.
  • You must be an Australian citizen or, if you are not an Australian citizen, you must have been physically present in Australia for the 12 month period immediately prior to your online entry.
  • The Subject must be an Australian citizen or, if the Subject is not an Australian citizen, the Subject must have been physically present in Australia for the 12 month period immediately prior to your online entry.
  • Except for the Next Gen Prize, you must be at least 18 years old.
  • The Subject must be alive at the time the artwork is created.

Additionally, to be eligible for the Sylvia Jones Prize for Women Artists, you must identify as a woman. This prize is open to women of all diversities.

Directors, officers and employees of QPP are not eligible to enter the Competition. QPP volunteers are eligible to enter.

Sitters Consent Form:  

  • *New* In 2025 all artists must have their sitter sign a Sitter Consent Form (even if it is a self portrait) which must be uploaded as part of your entry.
