Purpose

Cancer Australia is inviting partnerships that involve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led organisations collaborating with research groups and mainstream health services, working closely with communities.

Overview

The objectives of the grant program are to:

  • strengthen cancer research to improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health
  • build the capacity of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research sector now and into the future, including through mentorship and leadership opportunities
  • elevate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led research, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership, genuine co-design, co-authorship, collaboration, and partnerships
  • empower and enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander frameworks, research methodologies, and data sovereignty
  • elevate community-driven research and the culturally safe inclusion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers, families, and communities in cancer research.

Limitations

To apply for the grant, applicants will need to:

  • be an Administering Institution approved by NHMRC.
  • demonstrate an existing or new relationship between organisations that will work in partnership with community to deliver the research activities, and includes: 
    • at least one Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led organisation and at least one mainstream organisation (including cancer services and/or research organisations), OR 
    • two or more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led organisations.
  • develop relevant capability and capacity of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cancer research workforce by proposing research that:
    • is led or co-led (i.e. Chief Investigator A or B) by an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander researcher, AND
    • includes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with cultural, community, or clinical responsibilities, within the research team.
